Background to this wastewater and water resources, research

The world’s population is averaging a growth rate of around 1.1% annually. This is creating more water usage and as a result a greater demand for improved water utilities and sanitation through water and waste treatment and water management, especially in developing countries and urban areas, as stronger population growth is generally observed in these regions. An increase in the demand for information on water and water facts has also been driven by the fact that many countries have been asked to meet the water target under the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). A target of reducing ‘the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and sanitation’ for eligible countries by half by 2015.

Private sector- water utility companies
Using water facts and and water statistics compiled from our water resources database, it is clear that to meet the growing demand for safe water usage and sanitation, more private sector involvement will be needed in the water sector. Due to the investment involved and expertise needed, the share of private companies in the water and wastewater market is forecast to increase from 8% of the global population in 2003 to 17% in 2015.

Water utility companies
Contracts for water and wastewater projects can involve different degrees of private and public sector involvement, and from small players to global water utility companies. Several major water utility companies dominate the water market worldwide. These companies include Ondeo/Suez, Veolia Water, Thames Water, American Water, Berlin Wasser and Bouygues/Saur.

Country
Using our water and waste forecast we found that state water utilities will still dominate the water and wastewater market for the foreseeable future. However, there is private sector participation in the water and waste sector. Countries requiring a large investment in the water sector and limited capital are expecting to have more private sector involvement.
Access to safe drinking water and wastewater treatment methods varies from country-to-country. It also means the investment required to meet water usage and wastewater goals varies.
