What are the top energy companies?

NRG Expert, the energy market research company provides research and data on energy companies across the globe. This month they set out to identify the top 5 energy companies in terms of revenue.

Rosie Seldon, from NRG Expert, asks “What are the biggest energy companies and why?” In terms of size, NRG Expert, found that all these companies ranked in the top 10. –  Exxon mobil, Chevron, Gazprom, Petrochina, Shell, Conocophillips.

But who is in the top position? In January 14, The Telegraph[1] reported that “Exxon overtook Apple as the biggest public company in the world” This was indeed a big moment. ExxonMobil rose to a market capitalization of $418 billion and overtook Apple’s leading position.

To find out who comes second, NRG Expert researched Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings™ which were revealed on October 23, 2012. Platts Top 250 [2] ranks companies by their financial performance for the previous year, and the outstanding efforts and dedication of their team.

Platt identified these 5 companies as the top 5 energy companies:

1. Exxon Mobil Corp

2. Royal Dutch Shell plc

3. Chevron Corp

4. BP plc

5. OJSC Gazprom

Platts put Royal Dutch Shell in second position. Royal Dutch Shell explores for and extracts crude oil and natural gas. It is well known for its retail network of 43,000 service station, operating under the Shell brand name.

Chevron, one of the world’s leading integrated energy companies, comes in third. Chevron is involved in virtually every facet of the energy industry and in January was ranked as one of the top 3 energy companies due to its revenue numbers of  $236 billion.

BP, despite previous environmental disasters, still managed to turn a profit of $25,698 million [3] last year (2012) and keep its top energy company status, bringing it in at number four. Making it officially the fourth largest energy company.

In addition Gazprom is increasing in the spotlight. Gazprom, is Russia’s largest energy company, and not only provides 80% of Russia’s natural gas but is also Europe’s biggest single supplier. [4]. Gazprom currently has a monopoly on Russia’s natural gas pipelines and an exclusive right to export natural gas.  Although other companies are hoping to challenge this, this currently puts Gazprom in a powerful position in the energy market. and has enabled the Gazprom shares to reach a staggering $115 Billion [5].
